Two years ago today, Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover, an 11-year-old African American boy, committed suicide. He could no longer endure the constant anti-gay taunts and bullying at school. As an after school program director, I see boys like Carl tormented every day. We need to change our culture. We can not continue to teach our young people that it is okay to demean some people in our community. I spoke about this in the “Empowering Ourselves” documentary. Here is the clip:
